Bone Preserving Stem Designs

Hip Replacement with Bone-preserving Stem Designs

The shape of the stem inserted in the femur varies among manufacturers. Some manufacturers are marketing stems that do not penetrate as deeply into the femur. Stems designed in this way should allow for better conservation of bone mass when it comes time for revision. Other features of the stem are intended to reduce the thigh pain commonly experienced by active hip implant patients. Two such stems are the Encore Revelation Hip and the Mayo Conservative Hip by Zimmer. Both stems are approved for marketing in the US by the FDA.
