In the ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacement the articulating surfaces are made from aluminum oxide ceramic. Ceramic components are extremely wear resistant and have much smaller debris particles than the metal-on-polyethylene plastic articulation. The surfaces have a high wettability which also reduces friction in the joint. The FDA has recently approved for marketing ceramic hips offered by Wright Medical and Stryker Osteonics. Other companies have clinical trials ongoing or in continued-access phase.
