Standard Knee Replacement Hardware
The standard knee replacement consists of three parts, one which connects to the femur, above the knee, a plate that attaches to the tibia in the bottom portion of the knee, and a plate which attaches to the patella.
The unicompartmental knee replaces just one compartment of the knee, that is the surface of one condyl, either medial (inner) or lateral (outer), and that is matched with a corresponding tibial plate section.
Advanced designs allow for more rotation of the medial condyl (medial pivot) to allow for more natural rotational movement, and advanced surgical approaches allow for preservation of various ligaments in order to improve stability.
Minimally invasive approaches reduce collatoral damage and may improve short-term recovery but that may risk compromising long-term results if it compromises the surgeons ability to acurately align the replacement device.
